Prepare a Summary and Review of a Supreme Court of Canada Legal Case
Students must prepare a summary and review of a Supreme Court of Canada legal case (selected from the list posted on the course web page). Selection of this case law topic will be done in case (five students per case on a first come, first served basis).
You are to summarize the case (key elements, majority decision, dissenting opinions – if any, and the effect on law in Canada) and identify the significant issue(s). Finally, you must explain how it aligns to federal legislation (which pieced of legislation were discussed by the court) and/or what impact it had on the legislation. Please do not forget that the Court of Appeal decisions often add important analysis and the Supreme Court merely adopts parts of the earlier decisions, so I will be looking for the proper identification of which court provided the salient overview of a key point (so you will definitely need to also review the earlier provincial Court of Appeal decision as well as the subsequent Supreme Court ruling).
Evaluation Elements: Each student must hand in a 1250 to 1500 word, title page, double-spaced and 12-point font, APA citation, and bibliography, properly written essay summary of the issue and the arguments presented to Dropbox.
