Final Essay Assignment: Interpretive Analysis of a Film

Conduct an interpretive analysis of a film of your choice. Focus on aesthetic elements and how they shape the
overall meaning of the film. Consider also how specific historical and cultural contexts affect what the film is
trying to say.

Essay Guidelines:

1. RESEARCH:

Rely on ONE SCHOLARLY secondary source. This can be a book, a scholarly peer-

reviewed article published in an academic journal (i.e.: Cinema Journal, Senses of Cinema), or an article in a
specialized magazine (Cahiers du Cinéma, Sight and Sound, Film Comment, Film Quarterly, American
Cinematographer).

You may also use other secondary sources, such as DVD commentaries, online sources such as film reviews
(preferably from New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times), Internet Movie Database (IMDb), and
similar. However these do not count as the one secondary source you are obliged to use for your final essay.

The one scholarly secondary source you use needs to be ANNOTATED. This means it has to have at least one
paragraph (8 sentences minimum): a) summarizing the text overall, b) outlining the author’s main argument,
and c) an example s/he is using to support it.

2. CONTENT:

Engage in a dialogue with your source. That is, explain why you either agree or

disagree with an author’s assertion. In order for your essay to be successful, you need to engage in at least
one such dialogue where you examine an author’s position in detail.

Give a clear historical and cultural context for the film you are analyzing. That is, explain how the time period
and its cultures/politics (the dominant ideology) affected the overall meaning of the film you are analyzing.

Interpretive analysis of the film should account for the aesthetic elements of film and their effects on how
the audiences experience and make sense of the film.

Interpretive analysis should be grounded in concrete shots, scenes or sequences from the film. That is, give
a detailed description of the visuals you are analyzing.

If appropriate, give an explanation of how the film you are analyzing fits into the larger body of the director’s
work. What are the recurrent themes and visual motifs that can be traced throughout his/ her work? Does

s/ he like to work within a particular genre? If so, explain why.

2. ORGANIZATIONz-The introductionneeds to include:1. Abrief summaryof the filmyou are
analyzing.2.Please, have a clearly discernible thesis-main argument -which needs to be underlined. A
good thesis can be longer than one sentence. It needs to address WHAT is your argument, HOW are
you going to go about proving it (what evidence you are going to use), and WHY is this important for the
reader to know (it answers the “So what?” question).-In order to ensure your essay is cohesiveplease,
clearly develop your argument throughout your essay. This means that every paragraph (or two)
addresses one aspect of your argument supported by a concrete examplefrom a film(= evidence that
illustrates your argument). That is, every paragraphexplains, expands and addsto your main argument.3.
FORMATTING:-Your final essayshould be 5-6pages, double-spaced, and typed in 12-pt font, with one-inch
margins. Please, insert page numbersat the bottom of your page. Please, stapleyour paper.-Please, make
sure you cite your sourcesin footnotes (or endnotes). You may use any citation format you are
comfortable with but please, be consistent-The BIBLIOGRAPHY (LIST OF REFERENCES)needs to be on a
separate page, single spaced, and stapled together with the rest of your final essay.lt will also contain
the ANNOTATED SOURCE.
1.Clearly identified topic-the filmof your choice.2.Three concrete examples (of shots, sequences, ideas) from
the film you will analyze. These examples may both generate and support your main argument.3.Give a
tentative thesis statement. 4.List your sources. Oneof them needsto be annotated. This means that the
source has to have at leastone single-spaced paragraph (Ssentences minimum) summarizing the text overall
and outlining the author’s main argument along with an example she is using to support it. Conclude with a
brief explanation ofwhy you either agree or disagree with author’s assertions and how you plan on
incorporating her ideas into your argument.

Order Description

Communication and Relationships in Film
In this paper, you will examine several central theories of interpersonal communication and apply them to the film of your choice. The focus will be on how communication is used to initiate, maintain, and terminate relationships, and will cover several theories of each stage. The film will serve as a vehicle for learning about interpersonal communication and relationships. You will analyze what the film has shown about the ways people relate to one another.

You are expected to write a short, three to four page analysis of the film. DO NOT go under two and a half or over four and a half pages. Your analysis should include 3 different sections:

Theories of Relationship Development
Choose two of the theories of relationship development discussed in your book (pages 219-222) and discuss your film illustrates these theories. Give several examples that illustrate each, and be sure to explain why you think these theories are particularly relevant to the film you have chosen.

Models of Relationship Development
Choose one of the models of relationship development discussed in your book (pages 223-227) and explain how it is illustrated in one of the relationships found in your film. For each stage in the model, you should define it and give an example from the film.

Maintenance/ Ending a Relationship
Discuss either how one of the relationships in your film is maintained by the characters (pages 230-232) or discuss reasons that the relationship in your film will end (or likely end) (pages 232-238). Be sure to discuss aversive communication behaviors that the characters display (if relevant) and provide specific examples.
You will need an introduction and a conclusion in this paper and include examples that you found to be the most enlightening, controversial, or even possibly incorrect. You will be expected to discuss what individuals did, what happened, and why. Relevant communication theory and text material should be introduced for each example. You should write this paper as if you were going to demonstrate your expertise and knowledge to an individual that has little or no knowledge of communication theory. That “pretend reader” should learn a lot from reading your paper.

1. A. Describe the concept and characteristics of so called film noir. Elaborate as to how the subject matter of a film noir is realized in terms of the film styles we have covered in the course: story, cinematography, editing, sound design and music.
B. As to the film Double Indemnity (1944), Dir. Billy Wilder. Elaborate in terms of the requirements stated in 1A. as to whether you think this film is a film noir and, if so or if not, why or why not?
C. Are there such things as neo noir films. If so, name one or two such films. What, if anything, do these films have in common with the classic films noir of the 40s and early 50s? If not, fully justify your answer. In your answer make reference to specific films as support.
2. What plot elements, if any, do the films “Double Indemnity,” ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice” and Treasure Of The Sierra Madre” have in common. Note: “Indemnity” and “Postman” are based on novels by the same author.
3. As early as 1922 (sync) sound on film had been invented, but little commercial or public attention was paid to the “Fox Phonofilm” process eventually adopted by the industry. Why do you think ‘The Jazz Singer” (1927), a silent film with sync sound sequences involving then very popular Al Jolson singing, so captured the attention of the public, despite broad industry skepticism and the fact that the superior Fox sound-on-film system had been available for 5 years?
4. Is/are there any type or types of stories, other than musicals, that benefit from sync sound? Elaborate with the examples of two films of your choice, as to what sync sound contributes to the impact of the film/story.
5. During and for some years after World War H there was a movement of sorts, especially in Italy, that has been often characterized as neo realism. Such Italian films as Open City, The Bicycle Thief and Umberto D are generally considered as exemplary of this movement. Notable directors include Rossellini, Fellini, de Sica, Antonioni and Visconti. Your instructor likes to view this movement as It’s A Hard Life movies. Articulate:
What distinguishes films of this period that qualifies them as neo realism? Discuss story concept, plot, production values, etc., and sociaVcultural influence/ context that bear on your answer. Answer by reference to particular films, if you can.
b. By 1966, Vittorio de Sica was doing comedy and a pretty good one, namely After The Fox with Peter Sellers. In 1960, Fellini poked pungent satire at Italian society in La Dolce Vita. What happened in Italy that films started having a sense of humor, do you think?
c. Does this classic neo realism movement pertain today to a recent film you can name? Discuss how the neo realism label applies.
