Manager Interview
Choose one individual in a managerial position for your interview. DO
NOT submit your final paper as a Question/Answer format. Rather, you
should discuss your thoughts, comments, and/or observations resulting
from the interview. The benefit of this option is the insight you gain
into the real managerial world, what you take away from the interview
that will make you a better manager, or those practices/principles that
you would emulate or avoid/alter. I am primarily interested in what you
gained from the interview and what the interviewee said that would be of
value to you in your own management activities. It is not necessary to
discuss the interviewee’s background or history with an organization
unless there is a lesson to be learned. You should consider what
questions you want to ask an active manager that would help formulate
your own managerial practices. Review the chapters in the text for ideas
on areas of management that you would like to know more about from the
manager interviewed. I will send some suggested questions in a separate
mail. Do not limit your inquiry to just a couple chapter topics.
Questions related to managerial responsibilities and practices involving
planning, organizing, decision making, leading, motivating, and
communication, for example, could elicit critical insights for
developing your own management style and practices.
Submit your paper to me in the Assignment link in Blackboard. If this
course was conducted in a ground classroom environment, I would have
each student brief the class on what was learned from the interview so
re-read your term paper and consider whether you have something of value
to provide. There is no specific number of pages or format for the Term
Paper except that papers should be double spaced. I am primarily
interested in what you have learned from the assignment. It is doubtful
that a one or two page paper can cover what was gained from an in-depth
interview regarding effective management practices or insights. As the
last item in the paper re-cap the one or two most significant insights
you learned from the interviewee that should be carried forth into your
own management practices and should be passed on to your classmates.
Alternative term paper
Based on your observations and familiarity with the organization
where you work or have worked, discuss your perspectives as to how well
the organization has or is conducting the managerial activities of
planning, organizing, leading, communicating, controlling, motivating,
decision making, ethical/social responsibilities, and human resource
practices. Support your discussion with examples either positive or
negative as applicable and present your thoughts as to changes or
modifications you would consider implementing or adopting given the
opportunity along with your rationale for such recomendations.
